Computer wire through HVAC ducting?

Postby grannie14 » Mon Sep 03, 2007 6:32 pm

You probably have never had this question. We want to install cat6 wiring to be able to network computers in our house. We have a Heat Pump system with 10" tube ducting. Is there any reason we should not route our computer wiring through a length of duct (supply side)? A computer person thought it might disrupt the flow of air. It is only a 1/4 in wire in a 10 inch tube.??
Thanks for any help.

Hello,
We have two cautions:
1. the temperature in the ductwork will fluctuate approximately 50 degrees F. This constant expansion and contraction might cause an eventual fatigue condition in the shield. This may eventually lead to alot of interference with your signal.
2. static electricity caused by air movement in the ducting might also offer some interference with your signal. I think the ease of the installation might make it worth the try.

Cat6 cable is heavy duty. I think it would be fine to run it through duct-work.
